In 1901, the Scantleburys lived at Chirkdale Street in Kirkdale, Lancashire. Samuel was 4 years old and had an older sister, Lettie E., 10. In 1911, he was 14 and was noted as an ”assistant on business” living in Walton on the Hill, Lancashire, with his widowed mother and sister Lottie.
