However, A John Edward Varney was christened on 10 December 1882 in St. Giles Without Cripplegate. His parents were John, a brace manufacturers’ traveller born about 1856 in Oxfordshire, and Susan (nee Harvey; she had been born about 1853 in London) Varney. His parents had married 4 August 1879 in St. Giles Cripplegate in London. In 1891, he was 8 years old and lived at Clifden Road in Hackney, London, with his parents and siblings William J., 6, Ethel M., 3, and Harry H., an infant. A visitor was also present in the household; James A. Ayers, 8. This John Edward Varney was in 1901 a tube attendant at the telegraph department of the General Post Office in London and in 1911, he was a sorter at the General Post Office, living in Walthamstow, Essex. There is a small chance he was the Lusitania crewman.
